Is there a way to plug a digital camera directly into an external hard drive without using a computer?
I don’t have a laptop but would like to take a lot of photos on vacation. Is there a way to plug a camera into an external hard drive so I can free up my memory card without using a computer? Thanks.
only if the drive has some kind of OS that will let it ‘recognize’ the camera and accept commands from either you or the camera.
Archos has devices that act as small portable external drives while also having an OS so that you can empty a camera without using a computer. THere are other brands besides archos.

If you’re in the US, Tigerdirect.com and Best Buys have some of the best prices for such devices…
Also, while on vacation, many hotels have a computer onsite and you could empty to a CD or USB drive (no OS required).
Internet cafes will also let you do this pretty cheaply in most cities. That’s what I did before I bought an archos
